NY Times Editor Reveals In-Demand Web Skills

November 28, 2007 1:44 PM Posted by mac

NYTimes.com has a Q&A with Fiona Spruill, editor of the Times' Web Newsroom (greatest ... job ... ever). The entire interview is worth a look, but journalism job seekers should pay attention to this bit:
"We want people to walk in the door with a proficiency in Photoshop, HTML and blogging software, and an understanding of Web publishing systems. Experience in the production of multimedia — including the use of audio and video editing tools — is strongly desirable. For our more specialized multimedia positions, we expect to see an extensive knowledge of Flash and an understanding of how to integrate databases into multimedia presentations."
See? We're not making this stuff up. Actual editors at actual publications want to see these things on your resume:
  • Writing and editing experience (natch)
  • Photoshop
  • Flash
  • Blogging (make sure you note the programs: Movable Type, WordPress, etc.)
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Audacity and other sound editors
  • iMovie, Final Cut and other video editors
  • MySQL
(Any others? I'm sure I missed a few.)

To simplify:

Mad Skillz = Great Job.

Update, 11/28, 10:03 pm: Steve Klein discusses Spruill's post at Poynter's E-Media Tidbits.
