Digg and WSJ.com Form Unusual Partnership

November 19, 2007 4:04 PM Posted by mac

Something very clever is going on between Digg and WSJ.com. Digg users can now gain free access to WSJ.com's subscription material simply by following Digg links.

For example, if I try to access this story through WSJ.com, I run into the subscription wall:

wsj with subscription

But if I go to Digg and click a link to the same story, I get the full version:

wsj with no subscription

Wondering how it works? Tech Consumer has a great breakdown.

This quirky relationship is a smart move for both parties. WSJ.com gets into social media without abandoning its sub system and it benefits from real-world traffic data that could make an eventual shift to a subscription-free model more palatable to the suits. Digg gets the prestige of a WSJ affiliation and it gains access to a content source that (finally) expands the site's tech-centric perspective.
