Backpack Journalism ... In a Car

November 6, 2007 2:21 PM Posted by mac

The Shelby Star's newsroom now runs on gasoline.

The North Carolina newspaper recently rolled out an SUV that doubles as a mobile newsroom. Shelby Star reporters drive the Star Car (natch) to news locations, then fire up the vehicle's on-board wireless and camera connections to file live online reports from a news scene. It's like KITT ... but for journalists.

Sure, the Star Car is gimmicky, but it also represents a leap forward in mobile reporting. Increased cellular speeds and the availability of wider wireless hot spots present interesting opportunities for mobile information gathering and reporting. Kudos to the Shelby Star for blazing what could be an important new trail in journalism.
