The First Principle of Social Web Apps and Its Implications
(Read/WriteWeb)

Sean Ammirati's analysis of social Web application development is an excellent example of practical deep thinking. Rather than focus on the programming or the infrastructure, Ammirati shifts the paradigm to look at the essential question driving all user-based projects: How does this app/product/site/thing help me?

From Read/WriteWeb:

"For each 'complete' user interaction ... the user must perceive they have received more value than the energy (and attention) expended to complete the task.

On one level this principle is very obvious, because basic human nature seems to prove it. People won't continue to engage in acts they believe are more expensive then the value they are receiving in return. What I think is important is that users must perceive the ratio of energy and attention spent versus value received to be 'profitable.' The ratio is actually more important then the absolute amount of value delivered."

I love concepts like this because they act as mission statements for intricate projects. Whether you're developing a software application, a Web site or a feature story, it helps to have a defining question/theme to hark back to.

Newspapers Should Embrace Online Aggregators
(Publishing 2.0)

Publishing 2.0 eloquently continues the newspapers vs. Web aggregators discussion that's been brewing for a few months (or years, depending on your perspective):

"The problem that newspapers and other traditional media brands have is that they still see branding as a function of controlling the distribution channel, rather than branding each unit of content that must now live and survive on its own in a disaggregated online media ecosystem."
The article goes on showcase best practices for turning drive-by readers into return visitors. It's an excellent piece.
