Judge deals blow to RIAA(Ars Technica)
The RIAA's John Doe lawsuit process was taken to task by Judge Lorenzo F. Garcia:
"This is a significant blow to the RIAA. If other courts decide to follow Judge Garcia's lead, the litigation process will become a lot more expensive and time-consuming for the RIAA, as the John Doe lawsuits would no longer be simple open-and-shut cases. Those suspected of file-sharing would be able to ensure that their interests are taken into consideration from the beginning of the legal process instead of only learning that they were the target of a lawsuit once they receive a settlement letter."
Journalism's future is in global dialogue
(The Philadelphia Enquirer)
Mark Bowden, a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly and author of "Black Hawk Down," sees an interesting future for journalism:
"Unlike with TV and radio, which are stuck with people reading out loud, customers of digital journalism will get the best of all media forms. They can wade into any story that attracts them as deeply as they wish. Readers will gravitate toward prose, while those who prefer sounds and images can simply watch and listen."I find it interesting that experienced Web editors, writers and producers all talk about consumer choice and multimedia, yet few ever draw connections between their industry and education. In the education world, this concept of choice falls under "learning styles" -- i.e. not all students learn the same way. Forward-thinking educators strive to address multiple learning styles with every lesson. Forward-thinking Web editors/producers are trying to do the same thing with their content. Perhaps each group could learn a little something from the other.
