Avian Flu Tracked Through Google Earth
Ohio State scientists are using Google Earth to track and analyze the spread of the avian flu virus. The research team used Google Earth's Keyhole Markup Language (KML) to project research data onto Google Earth's mapping system, resulting in an application that's accessible to experts and novices alike. (The navigation is complex, but this guide can get you going.)
I don't possess nearly enough brain power to understand the scientific implications of this project, but I have deep admiration for any group -- scientific or otherwise -- that employs an Occam's Razor method of development. The Ohio State researchers realized that a visualization of their data could open up all sorts of discussions, and rather than investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into a proprietary system, they turned to a simple a free solution: Google Earth.
