Web Edit:
How to Write for the Web (Lost Remote)
Cory Bergman from Lost Remote has put together a comprehensive guide for writing Web stories. The guide is aimed at broadcasters, but the tips are applicable to all journalists.

Bergman does a particularly nice job discussing headlines:

"So what makes a good headline? It should be simple, straightforward and active. It should emphasize a twist or compelling fact in a story, such as 'buried alive' or 'gasping for air.' It should contain search keywords."

Amen to that. Headlines and excerpts (decks) are often the only things a Web reader sees. If headlines don't hook the reader, the reader won't click. It's that simple.

Web News:
Boston.com Launches Daily Music Video (Boston.com)
I'm all for new ideas, but Boston.com's new Pop-Ed feature is a bit much. Each day, Boston musician Jake Brennan scans the local news and whips up an original song and accompanying music video.

Maybe this is one of those brainstorms that leads to something more substantial down the road (I can hope, right?). But as it stands, I can't see much reason to drop in for a two minute dose of news set to music and video. Or maybe I'm too old for this stuff.

Yesterday's news video, "My Duct Tape Prom Queen," is posted below. Go nuts.
