Social Media:Yahoo To Shut Down Yahoo Photos In Favor Of Flickr (TechCrunch)
Chalk one up for social media: Yahoo is ditching its photo service in favor of Flickr, which it also owns.
"There has long been an issue at Yahoo where newer services have competed with older services, and Yahoo has finally taken some strong action to getting their house in order with a consistent set of product offerings."
This is a big move and it could signal a sea change in the Web 2.0 world. Google and Yahoo have been scooping up companies left and right, and sometimes these services have significant overlap with in-house applications (e.g. Google Video vs. YouTube). Perhaps we're at the beginning of a filtering period.

US News and Media Report: Impact of Video, Google, and Blogs (Hitwise)
A new Hitwise report offers further proof that newspapers need to ditch registration walls and embrace search engines:
Search engines, particularly Google, have grown in importance as sources of traffic for Broadcast Media and Print category websites. Print news websites received 29.7% more traffic from Google in March 2007 than in March 2006, and Broadcast Media sites received 35.9% more traffic from Google in the same time period.
This report dovetails with an earlier article from OJR ("Are search engines stealing newspapers' content?").
Sidenote: Kudos to Hitwise for posting report data in a blog format and using the format to good effect. A number of folks posted comments/questions and the report's author, LeaAnn Prescott, responded.
