Amazon Goes DRM Free

May 16, 2007 11:02 AM Posted by mac

Amazon is trying to steal iTunes' thunder by announcing a DRM-free music service.

Check that. Amazon is stealing iTunes' thunder. If major record labels get on board, this could signal a dramatic shift in the download business.

Ars Technica says the as-yet-unnamed service is coming later this year. According to the official press release, the Amazon store will offer "millions of songs in the DRM-free MP3 format from more than 12,000 record labels." This means you'll be able to buy music that works on any MP3-capable device (iPod, Zune, Zen, that random thing Roy gave Pam).
