Grassroots Publicity Tools for Web Publishers
Link exchanges make me feel dirty. I've resisted countless overtures from a variety of suitors because, more often than not, the requests come from sites that have no relevance to my entertainment-oriented sites (why, I ask, would I ever link to "Chain Saws HQ" from my film site?)Even if I were able to find suitable partners, link exchanges don't really mesh with what I'm trying to do. I want to develop an audience the way newspapers and magazines develop an audience: by publishing relevant content that piques curiosity and motivates people to read and respond ... and return.
And for all you SEOers out there who are readying your venomous replies, you can check yourselves. I get it. I really do. I know all about inbound links and Page Rank. But, for me, it's not about ranking No. 1 in Google for a random phrase. Rather, I want my articles to spread across the Web and entice people to visit.
Bottom line: I need a different type of publicity.
It's taken me a while to arrive at this conclusion, but now that I've made the switch I'm starting to develop my own "publicity toolbox." In an effort to help fellow publishers out -- and, hopefully, initiate a dialog about various grassroots publicity tools -- I'm publishing a series that examines the grassroots publicity tools that I currently employ.
