Google News: Grassroots Publicity Tool

July 6, 2006 1:49 AM Posted by mac

Google News One of the great things about Google News is that it's selective. I've had sites accepted and I've had others rejected, and sometimes I'm not entirely sure why one succeeded and another failed. Nonetheless, the discerning nature of the Google News gatekeepers means that the sites that are listed are a cut above the content fray (at least, that's what I tell myself when one of my sites just got dissed).

The process for submitting a news source is easy: just drop Google a line. The Google News crew usually takes a while to get back to you -- sometimes it can be a couple weeks -- but they always respond. If your site is accepted, stories start appearing within the Google News results around three weeks after the acceptance email. If your site is rejected, the person putting the kibosh on your content generally tries to explain why, but the responses I've seen have varied from quite detailed to very cryptic. If you get an ambiguous rejection, make sure you ask follow-up questions. I've encountered a couple situations where a site was initially rejected because of an oversight on Google News' part, but then later accepted when I clarified a point through a return email.
