Yahoo Introduces RSS Ads

November 16, 2005 10:24 AM Posted by mac

The Yahoo Publisher Network rolled out RSS ad capabilities today. The Network itself remains in beta, but the move into RSS signals an important step in the service's march toward a full launch.

I implemented the RSS ads on a couple of feeds this morning, so I don't have results yet. Nonetheless, here are a few initial observations:

  • Ad Setup -- Putting the ads together is pretty straightforward. If you've ever optimized AdSense ads, you'll understand the toolset. Currently, the Network supports two common blog platforms -- Movable Type and WordPress. Hmm, I wonder why Blogger (owned by Google) isn't included?
  • Ad Colors -- At the moment you're stuck with what they give you. There doesn't appear to be a way to manipulate the look and feel of the RSS ads.
  • Placement Instructions -- Someone at Yahoo deserves a promotion. The Network's excellent RSS Setup Guide walks users through step-by-step instructions for inserting the RSS ad code into Movable Type and WordPress templates. Included screenshots from each system make implementation a snap.
When/if I get reliable results I'll swing back to discuss them (in general terms, of course -- don't want to violate the TOS!).

Incidentally, if you're not part of the Yahoo Publisher beta but you want to monetize your RSS feeds, check out Google AdSense. Google has been offering RSS ads for months. -- Mac Slocum
