Blogs: The Great Work Diversion

November 1, 2005 12:41 PM Posted by mac

And I thought I was the only one ...

Survey data compiled by AdAge.com (registration required) suggests that blogs will consume 2.2% of the U.S. labor force's work hours. Not so bad, right? I mean, 2.2% of anything isn't that much ...

But let's look at those figures from another angle: That 2.2% equates to 551,000 years of wasted time this year alone. The Ad Age piece also notes that blog traffic spikes during work hours (yeah, big surprise).

Of course, one person's "waste" is another person's income, especially if you cater to the work audience. While middle managers and Draconian office types will cringe at the thought of lost hours, those of us who publish blogs might want to keep work browsers in mind. For example, by posting early in the day, you increase your chances of being noticed during office time. If you post late, you could miss a key audience window.

Now excuse me while I go back to work -- I just used up my blogging quota. -- Mac Slocum
